Higher Education Policy

This course provides an overview of long-standing and contemporary issues regarding higher education and public policy. It is designed to help students better understand the breath of topical areas and issues that fall within this area of study. In addition, this course will expose students to the work of various thought-leaders in higher education policy from both academic and policy domains. 


Perspectives in Higher Education Administration

This course examines how higher education has been shaped by major trends in American society, how it has contributed to the development of this country, and what may be expected of higher education in the future. Higher education is also viewed in institutional and conceptual forms from the perspective of students, faculty, and administrators.


Seminar in Higher Education: Historically Black Colleges and Universities

In this course, students explore the historical and contemporary placement of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Topical areas include the history of HBCUs, the socio-political landscape in which they exist, and contemporary issues regarding these institutions. In addition to learning about HBCUs, students learn introductory qualitative research methods and gain hands-on experience conducting empirical research concerning these institutions.


The Student in Higher Education

This course examines college students and different college settings within historical and contemporary higher education. Students learn about various types of institutions and campus cultures, as well as how these institutional characteristics influence students’ navigation of their respective campus and various identities (e.g. race, social class, gender identity, religion and sexuality).
